Jackie Ryan is an artist and writer born in 1972, who is based in Brisbane. She holds a PhD in history and political science from The University of Queensland. She is author of Burger Force, an Aurealis Award–winning comic book series about an undercover pop-culture detective agency that operates out of a fast food restaurant. The comic features heavily modified photographs of performers from the Australian stage and screen, set against striking examples of Brisbane architecture. Burger Force comics have been featured at the Brisbane Writers Festival (2012 & 2013), the Emerging Writers Festival Melbourne (2012), Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles (2012), Pecha Kucha (2011), and the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco (2011). Ryan also founded a comedy writing collective called the Fanciful Fiction Auxiliary, with the National Library of Australia archiving both websites given their cultural significance. Her books include the award-winning We’ll Show the World Expo 88 (2018).
Ryan has worked with CREATIVEMOVE to create Burger Force–style art on a billboard art in Griffin Lane (off Ann Street in the Brisbane CBD) and in Light Boxes in Hutton Lane as part of the Brisbane City Council’s Vibrant Laneways program.
Jackie Ryan’s public art commissions are handled exclusively through CREATIVEMOVE.
