Quandamooka Country to be recognised in artwork partnership

Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) is working closely with Redland City Council (‘Council’) to create a Quandamooka Statement of Recognition to be prominently located at the entry space of the Redland City Council Main Administration building in Cleveland. The Statement of Recognition Project is being commissioned by the Council in partnership with QYAC to demonstrate Council’s commitment to the Quandamooka People. The Statement of Recognition will be a formal statement of Council’s acknowledgement of the Traditional Owners’ connection to country and their rights already recognised under their Native Title Determination. The Statement will be incorporated into a public artwork and earlier this year QYAC engaged CREATIVEMOVE to assist with this process.

QYAC has recently announced, and we sincerely congratulate, Aunty Sandra Delaney as the commissioned artist to develop this public artwork. The aim of this project is to create an artistic work which recognises Quandamooka peoples, their lands, winds and waters, the unique attributes of their culture and celebrate the artistic talent of their community. CREATIVEMOVE has worked closely with Saltwater Murri Artists and their convenor, Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, to conduct a professional development workshop in public art and to conduct a selection process involving QYAC and Redland City Council to select Aunty Sandra Delaney for the commission.

Our sincere thanks to Cameron Costello, CEO of QYAC, Avril Quaill, Curator, and Manager (Partnerships) at Arts Queensland and Stephanie Lindquist, Acting Director of the Redland Art Gallery for participating on the Selection Panel and all Salt Water Murri artists who participated in the Expressions of Interest process. We would also like to thank Council project manager, Leanne Tu’ipulotu, Manager Strengthening Communities, Community and Cultural Services, and her Council colleagues Di Andrews, Greg Jensen, Zane Trow, Tracey Walker, Haleel Rane, Kym Banks and others who have contributed generously to the project.

The recognition artwork will comprise metal panels which will incorporate both the Statement and images designed by Aunty Sandra Delaney and will be installed in early 2015. Council has initiated the project in line with their Corporate Plan Strategies to acknowledge the living culture of local Aboriginal people and to work with Traditional Owners and Elders to improve employees’, residents’, and visitors’ understanding of their heritage.
